Over the weekend of Jan. 25-27, more than 135 teens gathered at the FourPoints by Sheraton South Mountain for the Spirit Convention: Maccabiah. This convention is based around AZA and BBG competitions, chapter unity and spirit and many East Valley teens won awards that weekend. Here is a report from Aaron Wiener, associate regional director of the BBYO Mountain Region.

Rabbi Marvin Meir Reznikoff’s Chapter Moreh of the Summer Term: AJ Owens 

This award is given to the chapter moreh (Vice President of Recruitment, Retention, and Education) of the term who has given their all and dedicated their time to their chapter and gone above and beyond in the region.

Rabbi Marvin Meir Reznikoff’s Adviser of the Term Award: Daniel Nemet

Daniel Nemet, an alum of Reznikoff AZA and an adviser for 3 years now, was nominated by his chapter and won Adviser of the Summer Term. We are so proud to have a dedicated adviser who gives his all to his chapter and helps his alephs grow and learn.   Tovah BBG’s Nsiah of the Summer Term Award: Ellie Sims This award is given to the nsiah (president) of the term who has gone above and beyond to show everyone in the region what it takes to be a chapter leader

Tovah BBG’s Gizborit of the Term, Most Creative & Most Successful Fundraiser: Lyndsey Klein

This award is special, because Lyndsey stepped into this role in the middle of their summer term. As Gizborit, you are the treasurer and in charge of planning fundraisers. Lyndsey stepped up into this vacant position and proved herself! She also was awarded for most creative fundraiser and most successful fundraiser of the term.   

Tovah BBG’s Mazkirah of the Summer Term and Best Communication: Emma Freireich

This award is given to the chapter mazkirah (VP of Communications). Emma did an outstanding job of communicating not only with her chapter and in her city, but across the region.

Tovah BBG’s Best Recruitment Program: Ariella Golden

Ariella had an amazing term with recruitment, helping the chapter grow and getting 10 new members to join Tovah BBG. Their chapter went from having 5-7 girls at program to 15-20 girls. Ariella really strives to create personal connections with the new members and still does that in this new term, even though she is not on chapter board.

Tovah BBG’s Best Shabbat Service of the Term: Alex Barnett

Alex Barnett really took the time to plan out an amazing Judaic service for her chapter last term and it shows by winning this award for the summer term. Tovah BBG won the Sylvie Koch Trophy at Spirit Convention The Sylvie Koch Award is given to the Best Chapter of the Term is the highest honor that a BBG chapter in Mountain Region can win. The award is judged on many aspects of the chapter from recruitment numbers, programming quality and more.

Tovah BBG won the Spirit Cup at Spirit Convention

The Spirit Cup is awarded to the chapter that has not only won in multiple competitions throughout Spirit convention, but has also shown chapter respect, unity, and spirit together. This year a Spirit Points Rubric was created. The AZA and BBG Spirit Team and an array of judges tallied up points throughout the competition.
