Tuesdays at the J: The State of Native American Art

Presentation by Marcus Monenerkit, Heard Museum Director of Community Engagement

Native American art is experiencing a period of remarkable visibility, innovation and influence. While traditional forms such as pottery, weaving, beadwork, jewelry, basketry and carving remain strong, contemporary Indigenous artists are increasingly shaping conversations in the broader art world through painting, photography, installation, digital media, fashion and public art.

About the speaker:
Marcus Monenerkit has a 30-year career in museums. He is currently Director of Community Engagement for the Heard Museum in Phoenix. His work is focused on the preservation and transfer of Indigenous cultural artistic knowledge. He is a former Commissioner with the U.S. Department of Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board and served as Vice President of the Museum Association of Arizona 2018-2023. He and his wife Verna have been married 25 years and have two daughters.
