Dec. 13: Female Couturiers of the Twentieth Century

Presented by Phoenix Art Museum docent JoAnn Stultz

Our journey begins in the 1890s as we take a brief look at women and how they were perceived. We travel in time to the beginning of the 20th century and consider the global cultural changes and events that drove some designers to create a wardrobe for this new “modern woman.” This woman had specific needs and desires for her attire. You will meet four designers that addressed the changing fahsion of the time: Jeanne Paquin, the Callot Souers, Madeleine Vionnet and Jeanne Lanvin, each with their own special connection to the fashion industry.

About the presenter

JoAnn Stultz began her first career working for Lord & Taylor’s, New York. Within a few years, she became a buyer for women’s ready-to-wear. In the 70’s, she was recruited by Hallmark to Kansas City and became a buyer at the Halls store. She met her husband and married in Kansas City. She continued on in the fashion industry until 1978, afterward she wore many career hats, shop owner, florist, event planner and wedding adviser. Over time, they sold the businesses and she retired to become a full-time mom for her daughter Heather, and son, Reed. Later as they approached college, she went back to work. This time as a real estate agent and maintained that career for almost 25 years.

She has served on the board for may arts organizations like the Ballet, Repertory Theater, Young Audiences and Arts Partners. Her love of gardening brought her to serve on boards of the Botanical Garden & The Rose Garden. They moved to Phoenix in 2017.

Today time is spent keeping up with five grandchildren and gardening at her son’s home. She joined the docent program in September 2021 and has loved all the the challenges of going back to school but mostly all the new and wonderful friends she has met at the Phoenix Art Museum.
