Tuesday, Jan. 11: ‘Going to the Dogs’

Dogs have been muses or inspiration for artists for thousands of years, from ancient cave dwellings to pop-art installations. Greeks and Romans favored dogs as pets and valued them for their faithfulness and courage, while artists from Picasso to Warhol were fascinated by their beloved pets. Dogs intrigue us, engage us emotionally and are living symbols of protection, loyalty, companionship and unconditional love. We’re going to take a look at how artists have shown their admiration and respect for canines in paintings, drawings, sculptures and photography from the 1st Century B.C. to the present.

CAROLE KAUFFMAN has been a Docent at the Phoenix Art Museum since 2018. Originally from the East Coast, she’s lived in Phoenix since 1997 and enjoyed a long career in the nonprofit sector.
