The Struggle for Civil Rights in Arizona During the 1950’s and 1960’s

A presentation by Alice Finn Gartell

Tuesday, Jan. 6 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Learn about many of the “heroes” of the Arizona civil rights movement, and the efforts made to fight discrimination based on race and religion during that time period.

About the speaker:

Alice Finn Gartell is an Arizona native whose family was influential in Arizona’s civil rights movement.  Her father, Herbert Finn, filed lawsuits that desegregated Arizona’s public schools before Brown v. Board.

Alice graduated from ASU with a BS in political science.  For 11 years, she worked as an adoption caseworker and juvenile probation officer for the Maricopa Co. Juvenile Court. Alice returned to ASU and graduated summa cum laude from ASU College of Law in 1989.  She clerked for the Honorable Judge Canby on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and became the first general counsel of the Arizona Education Association.  In addition to representing public school teachers, Alice wrote booklets for teachers on a variety of legal topics.

Alice is a proud member of Arizona’s Jewish community and Temple Solel. She and her late husband, Chuck Gartell, previously served on the EVJCC board. Her husband also worked at the EVJCC preschool and her daughters are EVJCC preschool graduates.

For 25 years, Alice’s passion and primary mitzvah project has been promoting literacy by distributing books to poor and remote schools in Latin America. On behalf of Books for a Better World, Alice annually purchases over 6,000 Spanish children’s books that travel volunteers deliver to 100 schools in Central America.
