‘Galveston: The Ellis Island of the West’
A presentation by travel journalist Dan Fellner
Tuesday, Feb. 24 | 10-11:30 a.m.
It’s a mostly forgotten but pivotal chapter in Jewish-American history: The Galveston Movement. From 1907-14 some 10,000 Jews, fleeing religious persecution in Eastern Europe, immigrated to America through the unlikely port of Galveston, Texas. Travel journalist Dan Fellner visited Galveston and met some of the descendants of the Jewish immigrants who arrived in Texas more than a century ago and built a new life in the western United States. We’ll see the sites related to the Galveston Movement and learn about a surprisingly robust Jewish community that produced five mayors, prominent business leaders and two highly renowned rabbis.
