MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Home, Sweet Home
After 32 years, we will finally have a place to call our own and we're EXCITED! The first step in our transformation has already been accomplished. Our site has been identified and is located at the southwest corner of Alma School and Ray Road, a central and easily accessible address in the East Valley. The existing building, which is over 25,000 sq. ft. will be renovated inside and out. Our architect, Ilan Baldinger, is working with us to plan the interior spaces and playgrounds. He has already designed a beautiful, classy exterior elevation and a sharp new logo. The building sits adjacent to 4 acres of vacant land which will allow us to expand and grow. The interior of the building will be designed to accommodate all our current services with plenty of space to develop a full-service JCC. Renovations will begin this winter which will prepare the building for programs and services in August 2005.
A ground-breaking ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 26th at 4:00 p.m. at the Alma School and Ray location. This will kick off our Capital Funds Drive. Our Board and Capital Campaign Committee are very enthusiastic and have held regular planning meetings for weeks. If you would like to become involved or volunteer your help, call Committee Chair, Ben Benedict or Board of Managers President George Jacobson at (480) 897-0588.
Together, we can work miracles!

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The 2004-05 school year has gotten off to a great start. Lots of wonderful children eager to learn and have new experiences. All our classes have been spending time learning about the fall Jewish holidays through music, art, stories and food. During the month of October, we will welcome Chabad rabbis who will bring a lulav and etrog to enhance our Sukkot holiday and Rabbi Straus from Temple Emanuel will talk to our children about Simchat Torah.
October is National Fire Prevention month. Beverly Burns from the Tempe Fire Department will visit our school to talk to the children about fire safety. If we're lucky, a fire truck may delight the children as well.
Now that it's fall (on the calendar anyway), we're enjoying the respit from scorching temperatures and hoping for the glorious cool days of autumn. The staff and children of the JCC school wish you all a happy holiday season.
Mommy & Me at the JCC
Mommy and Me, a class for moms and their children (aged 14-30 months) will be meeting at the East Valley JCC on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Leah Zilberman, an experienced educator and substitute teacher at the JCC facilitates the class. With a special focus on Judaic holidays and themes, children will experience crafts, music, circle time, stories, snacks and more. The first and second grade will be taking a trip to Temple Emanuel while the 3-6th graders will take a trip to Temple Beth Israel. The 3-6th grade will be taking a trip to the Phoenix Art Museum and the 1st & 2nd graders are going to get some culture at the symphony. What an art-filled month! Each class has been hard at work. The 5th/6th grade class has impressed us all with their lessons in algebra. The 3rd/4th graders have been solving multi-step word problems and the 1st/2nd graders are moving right along with their own math lessons.
The 3rd/4th grade class has started a current events wall. Everyone has been clipping photos and articles to add to the wall. The 5th/6th graders learned how to write in hieroglyphics. Their name plates are so cool!
