November 2003

PRESCHOOL

On Friday, November 21, the JCC Preschool will welcome grandparents to share Kabbalat Shabbat with their grandchildren at the weekly service. In addition to sharing in the traditional snack of challah and juice, guests will participate in Shabbat blessings and songs the children sing every week to prepare for the Sabbath. This is a wonderful experience for children and grandparents alike.

THANKSGIVING AT THE J

Wednesday, November 26, will find children and staff of the JCC Preschool celebrating at the Annual Thanksgiving Feast. Children learn special holiday songs and create decorations for their classrooms and the dining tables. As we retell the story of the pilgrims and their difficult early months in this country, the plenty, which was enjoyed later on, reminds all of us how fortunate we are. Best wishes to all of you for a happy holiday.

MEN'S CLUB

The Men's Club at the East Valley JCC is a group that meets one Sunday morning a month, featuring a variety of speakers from sports broadcasters, to political analysts, to literary specialists. Everyone is welcome, and we are always looking for new friends to join us! A bagel & lox breakfast is served at 9:30, and the lectures begin about 10 a.m. If you are interested in getting on this mailing list, please call Ilene at the JCC at 897-0588. This month's speaker is Professor Norman Levine, with a lecture entitled, "The Renaissance of Jewish Life in Berlin." In 1983-84, and again in 1987-88 I was a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar and conducted a year of research in Berlin on each occasion. Since then I visited Berlin repeatedly, and this summer spent 6 weeks there. Based on my experiences over all these years I will speak on the rebirth of Jewry in Berlin, and all of Germany: the growth of the Jewish population, Jewish newspapers, community associations, Holocaust Memorials, and the education of German youth about the Holocaust, as well as the attitude of the German Government toward Jews.

      Sunday, Dec. 14 @ 9:30 a.m.
RSVP to the JCC at 480-897-0588

Book Sale

It's time to clear off those shelves and stacks of books you've read this past year. The November Used Book Sale benefits the Early Childhood programs at the JCC. Contemporary adult hardback and paperback books as well children's literature are most in demand. Ask book lovers you know if they have any tax deductible contributions they might care to donate. Don't forget to do a little browsing yourself during our annual book sale!

Direct Your Tax Dollars

A unique opportunity allows Arizona residents to contribute to Jewish Day Schools. The East Valley JCC Day School as well as other valley Jewish Day Schools have formed a non-profit corporation which allows tax payers to contribute up to $625 to a School Tuition Organization (STO) which will be credited dollar for dollar against Arizona payer's state income tax. The statue was conceived to provide funds for day school education scholarships.

The East Valley JCC kindergarten program as well as the JCC Day School will be the direct beneficiaries of the statute. Your contribution to the scholarship fund simply reduces your tax liability by the amount you contribute up to $625. What a tremendous opportunity to direct your tax dollars toward Jewish Day School education.

Rummage Sale

The world's greatest garage sale will be held at Diane Umeda's home on November 21 & 22 (Friday and Saturday); this event is usually the Early Childhood Department's most productive fundraiser of the year.

Your donations are the foundation for the success of this event. Furniture, adult and children's clothing, baby toys and furniture, house wares, small electrics, art & décor items, any gently used items will be appreciated. You may drop them off at the JCC or arrange with Diane to bring them directly to her home. This especially applies to large pieces of furniture. We will gladly supply a donation letter for tax purposes.

Questions? Call Diane at 897-0588 for information.
