2004 Summer Camp

"Camp Sholom" & "Camp K'Tonton"

Summer is just around the corner and registration is filling up fast. Our theme this summer is "Tradition". Join us as we beat the heat and hit the road for a summer of fun at the East Valley JCC. Many new programs and ideas are being offered, along with our favorites from summers past. We anticipate the best Family Picnic ever (June 17th), along with overnighters, and a week full of Maccabiah Games sure to ignite a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. This year parents of children 1st grade and up will participate in a number of Maccabiah games during the Family Picnic to help their children's team. The Israeli Scouts will be here as well, and stopping at our camp on Israel Day (June 29th). All are welcome to join us for that special event! Our fifth annual Mitzvah Mania Week is sure to be another great success, thanks to all the campers and their families who donate time, food, clothes, etc. We'll be on stage for our annual Rock Show on July 15th, with great songs and costumes galore. This is one event you don't want to miss!

Our field trips look great. We've planned many new field trips that compliment our favorite old trips we always enjoy. They include three plays, "The Little Mermaid" and "Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" at the Broadway Palm West Dinner Theatre and "Annie" at the Herberger Theatre, Makutu's Island, the Circus, Sunsplash, and much more. Our field trips don't end there! We have away trips that the 5th - 8th graders will really enjoy. The first trip is to Long Beach, where we'll be hanging out on the beach and Universal Studios. The second trip we're off to Lake Powell, Flagstaff & Sedona so we can beat the heat in Tempe!

We also have our CIT program for 9th graders. This is a great program for any young teens that may want to become counselors themselves one day.

They will gain practical experience in a fun, social setting while learning the basics of camp counseling and programming through workshops and other hands on projects.

Some of their projects include: Maccabiah Games (programming, judging, evaluating, etc.), planning for the family picnic, and working on Mitzvah Mania Week. It's the perfect program to mold young teens into effective camp counselors.

We still have the Getaway Gang program this summer. This program is open to any 5th - 9th grader who's summer is so crazy and they're just too busy to attend camp everyday, but still want to go on fun and exciting trips! We are offering 2 exciting Getaway adventures this summer; Trip 1 - June 23 - 25 - Long Beach California, Universal Studios and beach activities here we come! Trip 2 - July 21 - 23 - Lake Powell, Flagstaff & Sedona. Call Lisa for more details.

Of course Summer Stock will be back with an exciting new production of "Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". This after camp theatrical program is open to all children entering kindergarten and up. It should be another summer of great fun rehearsing, creating, and performing. Please contact the JCC for more information.

This summer will prove to be one of the best summers ever and we're looking forward to seeing everyone at camp!

2004-05 Enrollment Update

Enrollment for the 2004-05 school year is on the move. We're both encouraged and delighted that more children have already been registered for next school year than at the same point last year.

Three of our age groups have only one, full-week opening, one is virtually closed except for one day, and our Kindergarten has only two openings. Other classes still have a variety of schedules available. Please call Cynthia or Diane at 897-0588 for registration/openings or to put your name on the waiting list.

Graduation

The JCC School will hold it's annual graduation program on Tuesday, May 25. It has been a wonderful year, full of fun, learning, playing and making friends.

At graduation, the entire "student body" will sing traditional end-of-the-year songs. Each class (two's through Kindergarten) will have a solo appearance as well. The Kindergarten children will each be introduced individually and given their diplomas. Two's, three's, and four's will receive their diplomas in their own classrooms immediately following the program. The Day School Choir will make a special appearance to commemorate the event.

Graduation begins at 10 a.m. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis. We look forward to seeing you!

Day School News...

What a year the Day School has had!! It's hard to believe the year is over! We have finished up Stanford 9 and AIMS testing and now our schedules are back to normal. The Day School Choir will be hosting a year-end concert on May 6th at 6:30 p.m. Each student is dressing up as their families favorite celebrity! It will be a sight to see! Everyone is welcome to attend! Call the JCC at 480-897-0588 for more information.

The Day School student council will start campaigning on May 3rd and will hold elections on May 7th. Our present student council did a fantastic job holding "School Spirit" days as well as fundraising for playground equipment needed for the older children. On May 8th, the Day School is having a camp-out overnight at the Kerr's Ranch. They will play with all the animals, eat s'mores, and have a blast. The Day School is having an end-of-the-year party at Skateland on May 21st. The children are looking forward to celebrating the end of the school year in such a fun way! It's been a terrific year.

Summer Stock 2004

We're back for Season # 5 of the East Valley JCC's Summer Stock with the production of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! Summer Stock is an after-camp theatrical experience that offers a unique, non-competitive ensemble for children entering Kindergarten and up. Julie & Mitch Solomon are directing again, and if you experienced last summer's "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown", "Pinocchio" in 2002, the enchanting performance of "Snow White" in 2001 and Summer Stock's debut with "The Wizard of Oz", you know what's in store for 2004! An incredible combo of acting, dancing, singing, sets, lights and costumes with that special East Valley JCC twist. Plan on another summer of great fun creating, rehearsing and performing!

Placement auditions will be held on Thursday June 17 starting at 3:00pm. Bring your imagination, your loudest voice and get ready to have some fun! Rehearsals begin Monday June 21st and are held on Monday's & Thursday's (additional Wednesday rehearsals for selected roles) from 3:00 - 5:00pm. Two performances of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will be held on Sunday August 1st at 1:00 & 6:00pm.

Enrollment in the JCC Summer Camp is not a requirement. Cost is $165 per child (10% 2nd child discount).
