Summer Camp 2002

Summer is just around the corner and registration is filling up fast. Everyone is excited about being "On the Road Again", which is our theme for this summer. Join us as we beat the heat and hit the road for a summer of fun at the East Valley JCC. Many new programs and ideas are being offered, along with our favorites from summers past. We anticipate the best Family Picnic ever (June 13), along with overnighters, and a week full of Maccabiah Games sure to ignite a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. The Israeli scouts will be on the road as well, and stopping at our camp on Israel Day (June 28). All are welcome to join us for that special event! Our third annual Mitzvah Mania Week is sure to be another great success, thanks to all the campers and their families who donate time, food, clothes, etc. We'll be "On the Road Again" for our annual Rock Show (July 18), with traveling tunes and costumes galore. Don't miss it!

Our field trips look great. We've planned many new trips that compliment our favorite old trips which we always enjoy. They include two plays, "Annie" and "Winnie the Pooh", Makutu's Island, the Circus, Sunsplash, the Rock Gym, and much more. The road trips don't end there. We have away trips that the 5th - 8th graders will really enjoy. The first trip is to Las Vegas, as we splash around one of the best water parks in the country. The second trip will be to California, with many new adventures to enjoy (Tolerance museum, maybe a talk show, Knott's Berry Farm).

We have already spoken with our two new Shlichim (Israeli Staff), Sabrina Glasberg and Eilon Sasson. They seem perfect and we expect them to be a fabulous edition to our camp program. Sabrina is 21 years old and lives in Kiryat-yam in Israel. She was born in Argentina and moved to Israel when she was 7 years old. She is described as an outgoing, friendly person with a passion for dancing (ballet, Israeli folk, etc.) and also enjoys rollerblading, camping, volleyball, and much more. She is currently in the Israeli Army as an Artillery Soldier and plans to begin at University to become a "children's doctor". Sabrina will be our Israeli Culture Specialist for our 2002 season. Eilon is 21 years old and lives in Jerusalem, where he was born. He is described as highly motivated and very friendly, with a warm smile and great personality. When he was younger he lived in the U.S. for three years, two in N.Y. and one in San Francisco. He enjoys playing and coaching basketball as well as interests in many other sports and activities. Other hobbies include painting and sketching, camping, hiking, etc. He served in the Israeli Army as a Commander at a basic training camp and as a Combat Soldier. We look forward to meeting and working with Sabrina and Eilon, and anticipate having a great summer with them.

We are excited to introduce our new "OA Teen Travel" program, which offers Outdoor Adventures for young teens ages 13-15 years of age. There are six 1-week sessions to choose from, and space is limited to 12 campers per session. Call the JCC for more details!

We also have a new CIT program for 9th graders. This is a great program for any young teens who may want to become counselors themselves one day. They will gain practical experience in a fun, social setting while learning the basics of camp counseling and programming through workshops and other hands on projects. Some of there projects include: Maccabiah Games (programming, judging, evaluating, etc.), planning for the family picnic, and working on Mitzvah Mania Week. It's the perfect program to mold young teens into effective camp counselors.

Summerstock will be back with an exciting new production of the classic "Pinocchio". This after camp theatrical program is open to all children from kindergarten through 8th grade. It should be another summer of great fun rehearsing, creating, and performing. Please contact the JCC for more information.

Summer camp will begin at our current location on E. Hermosa Drive, but we will soon be "On the Road Again" and moving to a new location after camp begins. The new JCC address will be: 1515 S. Indian Bend Rd., Chandler, 85281.

This summer will prove to be one of the best summers ever and we're looking forward to being "On the Road Again."

SCHOOL • YOUTH • CAMP

Pre-School & Kindergarten Graduation

The annual graduation program for preschool and kindergarten children will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31st. Children will sing traditional graduation songs; each class will have a presentation of its own as well. Diplomas will be given to kindergarten children during the program. All preschoolers will receive certificates afterward. There will be a special guest performance by our dayschool students in song and sign.

This will be a bittersweet occasion as well celebrate the conclusion of a successful school year and bid goodbye to the facility that has been our home for 18 years.

Spring Open House

The JCC's Annual Open House, Pizza Dinner & Quilt Raffle was held on April 23rd and enjoyed by the many families who attended. The classrooms beautifully decorated with student's art and projects were visited after a pizza dinner and quilt raffle where the lucky families went home with a wonderful keepsake of their child's school year.

Our special thanks to Diane Umeda and Diane Burns for constructing the beautiful quilts.

"Get a Job"

Looking for a rewarding way to spend the day, get JCC membership and a generous discount on your child's school tuition and/or daycare? You might be just the people we're looking for! If you're interested in working as a teacher, aide or caregiver during the 2002-03 school year, give Cynthia a call at 480-897-0588.

Our 2nd/3rd grade class is looking for a part-time, morning only aide for the 2002-2003 school year.

Day School News...

On Wednesday, April 17, our Day School joined all the Day Schools in the valley for a Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) celebration. It was a lot of fun to be with other Jewish students from around the valley.

On Tuesday, April 30, we will have a Lag b'Omer celebration at the school. Parents are invited to come see what their children have learned in tefillah (prayers) and then we will have a breakfast followed by a parent-child kickball game. It should be lots of fun!

On May 14, we will have our science fair. I encourage everyone to come see the tremendous effort our students are putting forth.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer.
