The Centerfold

February 2006

From the Executive Director

It is hard to believe that I am already writing a column that includes information about summer camp. Within a few weeks of receiving this month's Centerfold the Camp brochure should be hitting your mailbox. This summer promises to be one of our best ever! New for this summer we have divided the main part of the summer into three 3-week sessions. The idea behind the change is to try to create a greater sense of friendship and community among all the campers. Our goal this summer is that each camper have a safe summer, and that they also leave camp with one good friend that they did not have at the beginning of the summer.

In addition to changing the length of the sessions we have also created different camps for campers of different ages. The structure of the camps is such that as campers get older their privileges increase and they spend more time away from the JCC on in town field trips. For our middle school aged campers we are pleased offer a great trip to Los Angeles highlighted by a day at Universal Studios as well as trips to the Museum of Tolerance and Raging Waters water park. This summer will surely create Memories to Last a Lifetime!

I hope that each one of you consider taking part in our annual Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday, February 11th at Kyrene Lanes in Chandler. While the Bowl-a-Thon does act as a Center fundraiser it is also an excellent time for all members of our community to come out and socialize and have a good time. In other Center news please make sure that you look for the following new programs inside of this month's Centerfold:

  • Yoga beginning on February 6, from 6-7:30 p.m.
  • Jazzercise beginning on February 9, from 5-6 p.m.
  • Coffee & Crayons- an interactive program for Dads & their child(ren)
  • And much, much more!

Registration for the 2006-07 school year has officially begun. Forms and other materials may be obtained at the JCC office or we will be glad to mail them to you. We are expecting to have a full program next year as we begin our second year in the beautiful Barness Family East Valley JCC.

Reservations for 2006-07 placement are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Forms are dated as we receive them. The deposit to hold a space for your child is May 2007 tuition.

Infant Massage Class

Infant massage is a gift from parent to child that lasts a lifetime. Touch is the most important of all the senses. Touching stimulates all the other senses. It promotes bonding and attachment, is a remedy for colic, constipation, sleeping disorders, teething pain, behavior problems including PDD, ADHD, and the autism spectrum just to name a few. It enhances the parent child relationship for adopted and foster children, including children of foreign adoptions.

Whether your baby is a newborn or several years old (toddler/child), massage can bring wonderful, immediate and lasting results. A class in Infant Massage is being planned for all moms and dads. If you are interested, please call Brenda at the JCC at (480) 897-0588.

Genetic Diseases Don't Just Happen...They Are Inherited

East Valley Screening For Jewish Genetic Diseases
APRIL 2, 2006

1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the JCC

As a Jew of Ashkenazi descent, you may be a carrier of a gene that causes Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, Cystic Fibrosis or one of the other diseases prevalent among Ashkenazic Jews. If both parents are carriers, there is a 25% risk with each pregnancy of having an affected child. A simple blood test will give you the answer and could prevent a family tragedy.

"L'Dor v'Dor" is the Greater Phoenix Jewish Genetic Diseases educational and testing project. Last year, 134 adults were screened for carrier status for the most prevalent deadly Jewish genetic diseases; 21 participants tested positive as carriers for those genetic diseases.

The next "L'Dor v'Dor" educational and screening event will be held on Sunday, April 2 , 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Barness Family East Valley Jewish Community Center in Chandler. There will be presentations by a geneticist and a Jewish medical ethicist. Following the presentations and an opportunity to meet with a genetic counselor, carrier testing (blood tests) will be available at a greatly reduced cost.

Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 45 years will be charged $36 for the panel of tests for Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, Familial Dysautonomia and Cystic Fibrosis. Adults over 45 will be charged $250. Tests for additional Jewish genetic diseases will also be available at additional cost. ALL TEST RESULTS ARE CONFIDENTIAL. Pre-registration is required for carrier testing. Contact Kathy Rood at Jewish Family & Children's Service at (602) 452-4627 to register.
