The Centerfold

February 2001

We Need You!

The East Valley JCC Annual Bowl-A-Thon will take place Saturday, Feb. 17, 7:30pm at Kyrene Lanes in Chandler. The registration fee of $6.000 per person includes two games of bowling and shoes. The higher score of the two games will be used for pledge purposes with a 100-pin score minimum used regardless of lower scores. Obviously, bowling ability is not an issue for this fun event. Bring your own cheering section, choose your bowling mates and join us afterwards for refreshments and prizes. Everyone with a minimum of $75 worth of pledge will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Hey, did we tell you that the J mails out the collection forms to your sponsors and that there is baby-sitting at the Center that night? Please join us as we raise bucks for our relocation.

School Registration

Registration for the 2001-02 school year began on February 1 for children who will be 2 by September 1 through third grade.
Two classes of each age group (2 through kindergarten) are offered, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Through February 14, registration is open to all children who are currently in a JCC program and their siblings. Open registration begins on February 20 on a first-come, first served basis.
We are pleased with the prospect of remaining here, at our current location, for the entire 2001-02 school year. The Planning committee is actively continuing its search for our new location. Any "news you can use" pertaining to relocation will appear in the Centerfold, school newsletters and special mailings.
If you have any questions about registration or the 2001-02 school year, call us at (480) 0588).

AROUND THE CENTER

A Double Mitzvah

The East Valley Jewish Community Center needs 30 volunteers to sell 50/50 Raffle tickets at the Chicago Black Hawks/Phoenix Coyotes game on Sunday, February 11. Our JCC contingency will sell tickets prior to the game and during the intermission periods. Proceeds are split between the winner of the raffle, the Coyotes Goals for Kids foundation and the East Valley JCC. Our JCC teams have been some of the top ticket sellers in prior years.
Help the goals for Kids Foundation and our Center by volunteering for this one game. Tickets to see the Coyotes are provided for our group. Anyone over 18 is welcome. Please contact the front office for more information.

Chef Karen's Cooking Class

On Sunday, February 25, 3 to 5 p.m., our chef-in-residence will prepare Purim delicacies feature risen flour, and fruits, and perhaps a touch of liqueur pastries and desserts. Cost is $8 per person, with tasting, recipes and traditional beverage included of course! RSVP by February 20 to eastvalleyjcc@aol.com or call (480) 897-0588.

Wanted: A Few Good Men or Women

The Spring Fundraising Committee is off to a great start with a really fun and unique idea planned for this year's event on Saturday, May 12. Jill Barenbaum, committee chairperson would love to have anyone who might be interested in working on this committee to join us Thursday, Feb. 15, 7pm at the JCC. A great way to get involved, meet new people and help the JCC make the fundraiser the best yet!

School Celebrates Tu B'Shevat

Tu B'Shevat, the birthday of the trees, falls on Thursday, February 8 this year.
In school children of all ages are learning about seeds, planting, trees and nature. In addition to songs and crafts, teachers will be holding special Tu B'Shevat seders in their classrooms. They will sample fruits of three types: (1) fruits with an inedible skin, (2) an inedible pit and (3) fruits which can be eaten in their entirety. Rabbi Bonnie Koppell will be coming to the day school on Tu B'Shevat morning to lead the 1st and 2nd grade's seder. We're delighted that she is able to be with us.
Our annual collection of funds to plan trees in Israel has begun. The JNF (Jewish National Fund), which administer this program, has provided us with ubiquitous "blue boxes" in which to collect money.
This year, in addition to buying trees for Israel, the school will contribute to the Beth Sholom landscaping drive, where a tree will be planted in honor of our students.
In addition to the regular Tu B'Shevat goodies, the children will be treated to a special Tu B'Shevat birthday cake as part of our celebration.

Israel Birthright Trip

Several "JCC Kids," graduates of BBYO, JCC Summer Camp, pre-school, Kindergarten, youth programs, etc. joined thousands of young adults between the ages 18-26 across North America who participated in the second year of the Birthright Israel Experience. Funded in large part by philanthropists Charles Bronfman and Michael Steingardt, the 10 day free trip serves as an introduction to the State of Israel. Two birthright groups for the Valley, conducted by the Jewish Federation and Hillel at ASU along with a group led by Hillel at U of A included Aaron Argabright, Adam Berkowitz, Aaron Blau, Jennifer Gartell, Evan Glazer and Isaac Goffman. What a great opportunity for these lucky young people!

Help Wanted

The JCC Day School is adding a third grade class for the 2000-01 school year. Applications are now being accepted for the position of third grade teacher. Teaching experience and a strong knowledge of Judaic studies is desirable. Please contact Cynthia or Ilene at the JCC if interested or if you know someone who might be.

President's Day Mini Camp

The JCC is planning another fun and exciting President's Day Mini Camp on Monday February 19th! The 3 year olds through Kindergarten will enjoy a day of sports, arts and crafts and baking, while 1st-6th grade will be spending the morning at the Pueblo Grande Museum. Then they're off to climb Hole in the Rock at Papago Park, and last but not least they will be spending the afternoon at the Desert Botanical Gardens! Don't forget to pack a sack lunch! Camp hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with extended daycare hours from 7:00 to 9:00 am and 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost of this mini camp is $25 for Members and $35 for Non-Members. Daycare is $3.00 an hour. Please call Lisa to sign up!

Summer is on the Way!

Be on the lookout for Summer Camp information in March! Swimming, field trips, overnighters, the Rock Show, away trips as well as other events are planned to make this summer extra special.
