Climb Aboard the SS JCC

"Cruising the Mediterranean" Progressive Dinner proved to be smooth sailing for the 60+ revelers who participated in the JCC's Progressive Dinner held November 16. Although the start was a bit "choppy" due to construction and traffic on Chandler Blvd., the first stop at the Dworkin's was well worth the effort. The wonderful appetizers, décor, music and especially the delightful belly dancer set the ambience for a wonderful evening of eating, drinking and socializing.

Thanks to the creative committee of Jill Barenbaum, Virginie Polster, Jodi Stoken, Meta Rosen, Andrea Falk, Shari Davis, Ilene Blau, Lorraine Swartz, Blair Dworkin and chair Maira Zanrosso who set the stage for the gastronomical adventure. Hosts for the "Captain's Table" dinners were the Swartz's, Falks, Stokens, Blaus, Rosens and Zanrosso's where participants were randomly assigned and sumptuously feted.

The last port of call featured an impressive dessert buffet at the home of Andrea & Michael Waxman where everyone met again to enjoy the spectacular desserts. Kudos to Jill Barenbaum for her luscious dessert contributions. A huge thank you to all the families for graciously hosting this wonderful event.

United Way Designations

Did you know that the TCJCC receives United Way funds? This year, however, the Mesa United Way only gave us dollars that have been directly marked as designated to come to the East Valley JCC. The JCC uses these United Way dollars for those who require financial assistance for child care. If you or anyone you know gives to Mesa United Way, please mark #2480 to designate your gift directly to the JCC.

SCHOOL • YOUTH • CAMP

Thank You

Many thanks to all of you who participated in the fall fundraising projects for the Early Childhood Department.

We had sales of gift wrap, Constructive Playthings, all-occasion cards, Discovery Toys & Silhouettes. We appreciate your donations of used books and the mountains of items for our garage sale. Thanks, also, to those who placed ads, tributes and birthdays in the 2003 School Calendar.

Our Rummage Sale was of course a HUGE success, thanks to all of you wonderful folks who donated baby items, clothing, household goods and more. The funds earned from this worthwhile event will help us in purchasing new playground equipment for our children. Special thanks to Jodi Brumble, Eric Hizme, Diane Burns and others who donated time & energy to help set up.

The reality is that without fundraising, we wouldn't have the resources to both replenish and purchase new materials and equipment. We are excited at the prospect of purchasing a piece of playground equipment and other things to enhance the program. You made it possible!!

What You Didn't Learn in Hebrew School

A three part series offering an in-depth study of the Ten Commandments will be featured on consecutive Fridays beginning January 10 from 10 a.m. - noon. What you always wanted to know about the Ten Commandments and what your Hebrew teacher didn't tell you will be presented by Harold Falk. Falk, a native of Sioux City, Iowa comes to the Valley more recently from Houston, Texas with his wife Fran and to the TCJCC as "Grandpa."

Harold's avocation has been teaching Jewish high school students and also adults where he has lived. He offers to share his knowledge and deep commitment to Judaism.

Open to all community members, a light lunch will follow class. $3.00 per person donation requested. Please R.S.V.P. to 480-897-0588.

Adults Only

Join your JCC friends at a special, free musical performance. The Memoirs of Gluckel of Hamelyn at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4th at Beeloe's Café and Underground Bar on 5th Street & Mill in Tempe.

Based on the memories of a 18th century German woman who married at 14 and had 12 children before becoming a widow at 44. Drowning in debt, she took on the family business, built her own factory, traveled to fairs throughout central Europe and skillfully arranged marriages for all children. She also took up writing and for the next 24 years wrote of her life, her beliefs, and her dreams. The only pre-modern Yiddish text written by a woman, the "Memoirs" have become a classic in Jewish, European and Women's studies. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Seating is limited, so reservations or early arrival is recommended.

School Mitzvah Projects

The JCC School thanks the many families who donated non-perishable food items for our November mitzvah project - Feeding the Hungry. Food collections were donated to St. Mary's Food Bank which is in dire need of groceries to stock their near empty shelves. Every little bit helps.

December's mitzvah project will involve collecting donations for the Humane Society's wish list. Needed items include dog & puppy food, cat & kitten food, gently used towels, pillow cases and fuzzy toilet seat covers. These things are vital in caring for animals at the Humane Society's new campus facility. Donations may be dropped off at the JCC through December 13. We encourage you to drop off any of the items listed above between November 18th & December 13th. You will be doing the mitzvah, TZA'AR BA'ALAY, Caring for Animals. Questions? Call Cynthia or Diane at 480-897-0588.

Don't Forget!

Don't forget to send your check to the Jewish Community Day School Scholarship Fund. This Arizona tax credit opportunity helps the valley's day schools and kindergartens while affording you to direct your state tax dollars. These dollars directly benefit our kindergarten and day school. Married couples can direct up to $625. Other tax credit opportunities include $200 for The Working Poor which can be sent to the Jewish Family & Children Services or Kivel Campus and $200 to any public school.

Choir Concert & Sabuddy's Dinner

Mark your calendars. Thursday December 12th is our Sabuddy's dinner and Choir concert. We will be inviting our Kindergarten class to join us. The night will be filled with Israeli food and wonderful music. The evening is an opportunity for the Day School choir to show off their skills as well as a chance for the Kindergarten parents to get to know us a little better. We look forward to meeting all the Kindergarten families and enjoying a great evening of fun and entertainment.

Day School Maccabia

The East Valley JCC Day School, along with Pardes, King David, the Phoenix Hebrew Academy, and Jess Schwartz High School, will be joining together at the new Ina Levine campus on Tuesday, December 3rd for Maccabia Day.

The day will consist of two types of competition by school and then mixing the children together and dividing them into groups. The theme for the day is Miracles. There will also be creative activities around the theme for them to do together as well. It should be a great day to meet new children and enjoy the wonderful weather.
